Book review : Healing the Anima

Book review :

The media called him the ‘bad boy’!

Producers called him irresponsible!

Gossip mongers called him Casanova!

But medical professionals termed it ‘Depression’!

Depression is a black dog that besets and pushes you from peak to nadir. In this troubled journey of ups and downs, meeting dead-end is almost a certainty. Many even fail to recover after hitting rock bottom.

Healing Anima is a story of blockbuster Bollywood superstar who lost his fame within a decade. It's a coming of age story and we accompany Siddharth Deshpande through every stage of his life. Although the book mainly deals with depression it also talks about suicide, domestic violence, abuse etc.

We have two parallel stories going on in this book, one of Rocky as he suffers depression while other of Siddharth Despande, an actor which is narrated through his diary. How these two story are connected is very interesting to read.

It's such an important read because it shows how media distorts our reality. It's also important with so many of us suffering mentally and either not knowing it, or not admitting it to even ourselves. It shows the lengths to which it can take over our lives and that there is hope. Thanks to the author for tackling the subject of mental illness.

Did the protagonist meet the same fate? Or did he catch a straw?

The plot is very well planned. I particularly liked the ending. It is quite emotional and hits hard. I would recommend this to those who are interested in realistic fiction.

Happy Reading!
