I Hear You by Nidhi Upadhaya | Book review

 Book review :

"I Hear You" is a gripping tale of love, betrayal, and the ultimate price of perfection.  The story is set in Singapore, Lucknow and New Jersey as the plot follows the lives of a couple who got pregnant again after three miscarriages.

Mahika is trapped in an abusive marriage with Shivam, who has OCD. She's pregnant again after many miscarriages and is suffering from nausea and vomiting, as with every other pregnancy. Shivam is a geneticist; she met him when he was a research associate for her father. He plans to donate their baby to his genetic research lab. Mahika is trying to leave him and give her baby a safe environment. Due to societal pressures and the fact that she has nowhere to go after her father's demise, she cannot return to India. So, she's planning to grab her passport and escape to another place in Singapore itself.

Rudra is perfect in every sense, a cute adorable baby growing inside Mahika whom she loves dearly. Things were all fine when one day Mahika got an anonymous note threatening to spill the beans about her husband's darkest secrets and the baby in her womb.

But Shivam has hidden it and also changed the code on the lock in their apartment, thus trapping her. Both of them keep receiving mysterious notes and think it's the other person writing to them. Who's their mysterious messiah? It's heartbreaking to read from Rudra's POV, who is the baby in her belly, about how he doesn't want to come into her abusive world.

The alluring premise of the book grabbed me by the lapels because the idea of an unborn child helping his mother escape an unsafe marriage was too alluring to pass. And as I read, surprise after surprise unfolded itself as we navigate the world of unscrupulous scientists who tailor-make babies for their own unethical ends. It’s fast-paced, suspenseful, leaving you turning the pages as you root for Mahika to escape while keeping her baby safe.

Overall, this book was all that I expected in a thriller, fast-paced, suspense build-up and its maintenance, unseen end, and gripping and engaging writing. If you are looking forward to reading a thriller, especially a psychological thriller, go for it.
