Book review:
"Hues of Rainbow" is a collection of eighteen brief tales revolving around a critical female hero. Each tale is brief but highlights deep insights by depicting snippets of real-life heroes of life, women.
Among all the stories, I liked "Helpless Mother", "Touch of the Blue Sky", "The Daughter-in-law", "Representative" and many more. In the story "Jaya", the author depicts the way differences in consoling or reacting to a kid's failures or shortcomings can do in the development of the child and how it can change the whole scenario with a positive attitude.
In the story "Uterus", the author depicts the pain of a woman who needs to get her uterus removed. Suparna after getting her uterus removed is proposed by Apurbo. He accepts his childhood love knowing all her shortcomings of Suparna but after marriage their love is limitless. But there are so many factors that influence any man to long for his own child and same happened with him. His love reduces and shifts him towards whine. His excessive liquor intake compels her to part with him. She feels that she can return to her so-called home but after a few days, her brother and sister-in-law deny to take responsibility for her saying financial burden they can't handle. It is intriguing to see how a uterus can take a lot of twists in the life of a woman.
Being of Bengali origin, the author capably depicts the complexities of Bengali families, offering readers a rich understanding of the locale's life, customs, and culture. The accounts grandstand assorted points of view on life, making the narratives convincing. The language of the book is lucid and vividly depicts all the colours of life.
The strength of the book lies in the outstanding narration of the stories, especially in the depiction of working-class Bengali families. These accounts show how ladies, spreading over different ages, explore life's difficulties with strength and confidence. Mostly women are expected to leave their dreams or desires to adhere to their responsibilities of household or children. But the respect and honour they should be departed are never given to them instead they are always blamed for all nuisances or wrongdoings of children.
Women are engaged in various jobs moms, teen girls, companions, spouses, or mothers by marriage giving a nuanced investigation of their encounters. In entirety, the narratives reverberate with realness, permitting readers to associate with the characters on an individual level.
Overall, the stories are a depiction of the varied colours of life that women face during their lifetime. Each story becomes a reverent rainbow of women's emotions, desires and responsibilities.
