Human and Artificial Intelligence: A Boon or A Curse?

Human and Artificial Intelligence: A Boon or A Curse?

Today, while watching TV with my kids, I noticed how our coming generation is dependent on AI. They pick up the TV remote and switch to whatever channel or cartoon they wish to see. Isn't it easy? But if given a thought, it is risky too. Our kids don't know what is right or wrong, or judge. They are so innocent that they wish AI would connect them to the right mode of watching, channel, or scenes.

Is it true? Yes, to a certain extent. If AI is correctly programmed, then as parents, we can feel more at ease knowing that our children are exposed to age-appropriate content. However, we must remain vigilant and engaged in their viewing habits, guiding them in understanding the difference between entertainment and reality and fostering critical thinking about the media they consume.

We can trust it, but not completely. In our hectic schedules, where we are urged to find peace or some rest, we are looking for alternatives to handle our duties for a time. What if this somehow becomes forever? Will we last, or keep sleeping, or work under the AI as their slaves? It is high time to ponder.

Let’s be honest—AI is everywhere. It’s in our phones, our cars, and even our coffee makers. But as it weaves itself into the fabric of our lives, a question nags at us: Is this relationship a win-win, or are we playing with fire? The answer isn’t black and white. Like any powerful tool, AI’s impact depends entirely on how we use it. Let’s unpack the good, the bad, and the messy middle.

The Bright Side: When AI Lifts Us Up

1. Healthcare’s Silent Hero

Doctors do take the help of AI to identify problems in patients and then rectify them. It’s not replacing doctors—it’s giving them superhuman precision. During COVID, AI crunched mountains of data to help design vaccines faster than ever. And for patients with rare diseases? AI sifts through global research to find treatments that human eyes might miss.

Almost every field of science is using AI to help patients recover and know how they will look after surgery. This technological advancement not only enhances the accuracy of diagnoses but also empowers healthcare professionals to make more informed decisions. As AI continues to evolve, we can expect even greater strides in personalised medicine, ensuring that each patient receives tailored treatment based on their unique genetic makeup and health history. This technology provides them with a live image of how surgery is going on, your baby scans, dentists showing the real condition of your tooth and so on.

AI is helping us in every possible way and guiding us to take precautionary measures at the right time.

2. Education That "Gets" You

Remember struggling in math class while the teacher raced ahead? AI tutors don’t judge. They adapt to your pace, explain concepts in ways that click, and never get impatient. For kids in remote villages or adults juggling jobs and night classes, AI could democratise learning like never before.

Nowadays, AI can help you find words for writing or teach you a subject with ease. I find mostly people speak about an issue or what they need to find out on Gemini or Deepseek AI for answers. This shift in how we access information empowers learners to take control of their education, regardless of their circumstances. As these technologies continue to evolve, the potential for personalised learning experiences will only expand, making education more accessible than ever.

3. Jobs? Let’s Talk Innovation, Not Just Loss

Yes, robots assemble cars and chatbots handle billing. But here’s the flip side: AI is creating jobs we haven’t even imagined yet. Someone’s got to train those algorithms, right? The real challenge? Making sure no one gets left behind. Upskilling programmes and free online courses could turn this disruption into a golden age of career reinvention.

I find many ads sponsored by learnt people to learn how to get thorough with these algorithms and help yourself achieve a better level of success. So humans need to enhance their knowledge more than AI or become more efficient in governing AI.

4. Saving the Planet, One Algorithm at a Time

AI isn’t just for selfies and spam filters. It’s optimizing wind farms, tracking endangered species, and helping farmers grow more food with less water. In a world on fire (literally), that’s not just cool—it’s critical.

The Dark Side: When AI Stumbles (Or We Do)

1. “Oops, the Robot’s Biased”

AI learns from us—flaws and all. When facial recognition misidentifies people of colour or hiring algorithms favour male resumes, it’s a mirror reflecting our own biases. Scarier still? These systems often operate like black boxes. Why did the AI reject that loan application? Even its creators might not know.

Our phones get hacked, and we are left with nowhere to complain. Even our best practices to save our money when AI trackers mislead us with our loved ones' voices or videos.

2. Job Loss Isn’t Sci-Fi Anymore

Let’s not sugarcoat it: truck drivers, cashiers, and factory workers are sweating. While new jobs will emerge, transitioning won’t be easy. Imagine a 50-year-old miner learning to code. Without support, AI could deepen inequality, leaving entire communities stranded.

With the growing population of our country and dependence on AI, how many people could survive? The below-average learners will drastically fail, as they could not cope with normal people; then how could they fight for jobs with AI?

3. Privacy? What Privacy?

Your smart speaker knows your favorite pizza order. Your fitness tracker knows you didn’t sleep last night. AI thrives on data, but where’s the line between convenience and surveillance? And don’t get me started on deepfakes—your face could star in a fake video before you finish reading this sentence.

4. The Lazy Brain Trap

Relying on GPS? Congrats, you’ve probably forgotten how to read a map. Letting AI write your emails? Your grammar might get rusty. There’s a real risk we’ll lose skills—and critical thinking—if we let machines do "all" the heavy lifting.

The Way Forward: It’s On Us

AI isn’t some alien force—it’s a reflection of humanity. To tip the scales toward “boon,” here’s what matters:

1. Transparency:
If an AI makes a decision, we deserve to know "how". No more “trust us, it’s magic.”

2. Guardrails, Not Handcuffs:
Regulations should prevent harm (like biased algorithms) without stifling innovation. Think seatbelts, not speed limits set by horse-and-buggy laws.

3. Empathy Over Efficiency:
Prioritize tools that uplift people, like AI therapists for mental health deserts, not just ones that boost corporate profits.

4. Teach, Don’t Panic:
Schools should prep kids for an AI world (coding + ethics), and governments must fund retraining for workers phased out by bots.

So… Boon or Curse?

The truth? AI is like a chainsaw. In the right hands, it can build a house. In the wrong ones, it can burn down a forest. The difference lies in us—our ethics, our policies, our willingness to share the benefits.

Maybe the real question isn’t whether AI is good or bad, but whether we’re brave enough to shape it with humility. As the late Stephen Hawking warned: “AI could be the best or worst thing to happen to humanity.” Let’s not leave that to chance.

What do you think—is AI a teammate or a time bomb? The answer starts with how we act today.
