Kuroopa by Kapil Raj | Book review

Book review :
'Kuroopa' is a beautifully poignant narrative that brings out the best of characters while keeping the contemporary picture of reality of this world. This book is the first book of the 'Change Stories' series. It deals with some sensitive topics such as skin colour, body image issues. Even though the world preaches 'looks doesn't matter', But is it really true ? First thing that is acknowledged is looks :

💧 Appearing for an interview
💧 Looking for a bride or groom
💧 Want to eat a dish or try a new dish
💧 First approach by the opposite sex
💧 Beauty contests and much more...

Wherever one peeps , the first thing that is noticed is looks. But eventually what matters is quality but as it is well known that "All that glitters is not gold". Without quality the worth of looks also diminishes within no time. But to understand the deep meaning and imbibe the same needs patience and bit spiritual knowledge.

In this book , one gets to know about Meera who remains subjected to insensitive comments and jibes. This book portrayed the emotional turmoil one has to go through and how badly it can affect their self worth especially during the sensitive years of growing up. Meera is one of the three siblings but as per looks , the most ugly. Her black complexion didn't effect in love from her parents or siblings but others complement to her beautiful and brilliant sister creates an inferiority complex in her. She is unable to concentrate on her studies and feels dejected or hurt if anyone tries to make her a ladder inbetween her sister and him.

It is intriguing to read about Meera and how she evokes from Kuroopa or ugliness from her life. To evoke as a person and identify one's self worth is of utmost priority. The author meticulously weaves the story and predicting the harmful effects of self criticism and not valuing your own worth. He pin points the fact that it is ultimately your own body whichever complexion or shape only that is yours when you are assigned any work.

Overall, "Kuroopa" by Kapil Raj is a timely and thought-provoking book that explores the damaging effects of societal beauty standards on individuals' self-worth and mental health. Do grab this copy hat leaves you with a sense of optimism and motivation. I highly recommend it to everyone.
