Book review:
"Narasingha: The Legend of Padma Purusha" by Bhuban Patra is a captivating and gripping journey into the 13th-century golden era of Kalinga. It is Book Two in the Konark Secrets which narrates the story of Narasingha Deva, the King of Kalinga and the constructor of this grand sun temple built in Mundira.
As the king is making strategies to win over the enemies, he narrates his tale, as he had experienced it in his lifetime. He describes his journey about how from an inquisitive prince, he became one of the powerful monarchs of Bharat. He begins with his prophecy declared by the sage, his journey to Gurukul, the battle of Katasin, and many more.
Quote from the book that piqued me:
💘 He said that it was possible to create distractions so that a huge army got broken down. This made fighting easier for a small group of men. I think this strategy can be used in this fight to help us achieve our goal,’ I said.
💘 ‘A great army needs an even better leader. Only a person who can communicate well, strategise well, and effectively use his common sense, can become a good Chief.’
It is intriguing to read about the many battles fought between Kalinga and the Bengal Kings and why King Narasingha was known as the greatest builder of Bharat. It answered many of my queries about the existence of the sun temple built at Mundira which is now known as Konark. Why was an unusual technique used for its creation when tried and tested methods were already there? Did it hold some secret within itself?
The author has meticulously narrated the tapestry of events making the reader hooked to the story and urging to know the journey of the king. He has vividly depicted the firm faith of people in their deities and how Lord Maheshwara prevents his disciples. The depiction of Barabati fort, monarchs, temples, secrets behind many battles and much more is praiseworthy.
Overall, "Narasingha" stands as a riveting exploration of a king's journey, the construction of monumental temples, and the mysteries that shroud them, making it a must-read for history enthusiasts and fiction lovers alike. Worth reading, do grab it!
