Queen of Hearts (Seven Brides for Seven Mothers, #6) by Whitney Dineen | Book review

 Book review:

Queen Charlotte of Malquar, believing herself a matchmaker, interferes with Prince Andrew's love life, complicating matters for him. Agnes Dupuis, a capable secretary for Princess Aubrey with her own career plans, becomes a pawn in the Queen's scheme as she's transferred to work closely with Drew. Drew, bound by royal obligations, resists his attraction to Agnes, who is oblivious to the manipulation. Will they bridge the gap and overcome their differences, or will societal expectations keep them apart, despite their undeniable connection?

What distinguishes this series is the incorporation of chapters featuring the main couple's meddling parents, particularly the Queen, who has a history of interference. In this instalment, the Queen involves Agnes's mother and a friend, both unhappy in their own marriages, in her matchmaking efforts to bring Agnes and Andrew together. While well-intentioned, these chapters can feel somewhat distracting from the central romance.

The writing style is generally appealing, and I found myself entertained enough to read the book in one sitting. However, I didn't particularly warm to the hero. Despite his royal status, he doesn't come across as princely. At the outset, he purposefully behaves rudely toward Agnes, and later on, his behavior is attributed to snobbish cluelessness. I believe he needed more redemption and grander gestures, potentially making another character, Jones, a more appealing prospect.

I am grateful to NetGalley for providing me with this book, and I am offering this review voluntarily.
