The Snows of Nissa by Isabella Khalidi | Book review | Forgotten Kingdom Chronicles

Book review:

"The Snows of Nissa" serves as the inaugural instalment in Isabella Khalidi's captivating series, known as the Forgotten Kingdom Chronicles. Within its pages, readers will discover a tapestry of rich history and intricate mythos, accompanied by exquisite depictions of imagery and an expansive ensemble of diverse and compelling characters.

”i will gladly die a thousand more excruciating deaths if that is the price that i must pay so that i may finally, one day, hold you in my arms. there is nothing that i wouldn’t surrender for you, nothing that i wouldn’t endure just to have you gaze upon me with love in your eyes.”

In "The Snows of Nissa," we follow the story of Duna, the resilient protagonist embarking on a solitary adventure into the woods. Her mission: was to secure some game meat swiftly, all the while hoping to elude her grandmother's watchful eye. However, fate takes an unexpected turn as she is drawn by the growing cries echoing from her homeland, the Kingdom of Tyros. Emerging from the forest, she is met with a harrowing sight – her village ablaze, its residents fleeing in chaos. With her grandmother's life hanging in the balance, Duna cannot bear the thought of losing the last remaining member of her family.

Years later, having fled her home, Duna joins the army, displaying impressive skill as she competes alongside male warriors. It is during this time that she encounters General Cathal, a man of striking appearance and unwavering determination. Duna's admiration for his strength, agility, and occasional appreciation of her own prowess and personality grows into an intense attraction. Simultaneously, Cathal finds himself grappling with emotions he cannot ignore, torn between his loyalty to Princess Leila, whom he has known for much longer and plans to marry.

The author masterfully weaves a thrilling and adventurous narrative that kept me thoroughly engaged, captivated, and eager to uncover the ultimate outcome. The story's pacing and flow, particularly as it built toward its intense moments, were commendable, although some were undeniably harrowing.

The characters, while generally well-crafted, displayed moments of imperfection, lending them authenticity. The language employed in the story was explicit and occasionally graphic, portraying violence and death, making it suitable for mature audiences. While a few grammatical errors were present, they did not detract significantly from the overall impact of the story.

In conclusion, "The Snows of Nissa" by Isabella Khalidi triumphs due to its gripping tension, vivid imagery, and intricately developed characters. It unquestionably stands as an award-worthy adult dark fantasy, sure to immerse readers emotionally and leave them yearning for more.
