Butterflies of Success by Ranga Iyer

Butterflies of Success by Ranga Iyer | Book Review

Butterflies of Success

Butterflies are very similar to humans, as both include stages to cover to live. Even humans live in four stages of life: infancy, childhood, adulthood, and old age. In this book, I was eager to explore the transformations in humans as success is knocking on the door. The path is not easy, but the journey is mesmerizing.

"Butterflies of Success" is a thought-provoking and engrossing narrative. Set in the bustling city, the story follows the journey of Prem and Mukta. They shift to the city, leaving their village life behind. Mukta carries her fourth daughter in her arms, and the rest are moving along with them. After deciding to move to the city, they have only a limited amount of money, which takes them to a small kholi. Their new place has limited furniture, and the sewage pipe is overflowing next door, which made them feel low and regret their decision.

Prem begins working and earning a living. Gradually, with time, Mukta joins him and begins working and opens her tailor shop. They become compatible with buying a house, hiring a tailor, cooking food, and selling pickles. Their hard work pays them well, and they become capable of providing their daughters with education and a normal life.

As they work, they feel they can easily afford the living and educate their daughters. But a time comes when Prem needs to leave his job to help Mukta in her business. This step is assumed to be vital but consumes Prem in a pit of debts and alcohol. The hidden secrets of Prem haunt him, and he seeks the help of friends. His increasing habit of drinking and gambling, and increasing expenses, create a void that Prem feels he must fill.

It is intriguing to read about their daughters growing and dwelling into love and then marriage. The story creates curiosity to know how they plan to overcome their debts and live a peaceful life. Their sweetness and urge to do something for their daughters and for themselves is praiseworthy.

The author has meticulously narrated the hard life of a poor farmer who has secrets to hide from his haunting past. Her vivid portrayals of the life and step-by-step successes of Prem and Mukta are impeccable.

Overall, this is a sweet story of hardships and the pains undertaken to run a family when you have little to survive. I admired reading this heartfelt story. I would recommend this book to all.
