Uneasy Spaces by Shubira Prasad
"Uneasy Spaces" is a collection of nine stories that made me engrossed with thoughts and linger out many questions unsettled. These stories speak instead of the fraility of human ties and the shadows that stalk us.
Each story is very different and yet shares a tsunami of emotional terrain that binds them. The author has well weaved the narrative leaving you pondering on the turns or how the characters might have taken decisions.
This choice made challenges the readers who expect momentum of actions. There were moments that demanded the stillness and patience. It provide ample time for the reader to decide and think both sides of the situation.
In story, Jai Bhirali, the character of Gaurav and his first love or wife and their tragic end made me feel sorry for the couple. This story depicted so many aspects from the tough life of the air force officials to the dutiful son who remarries to keep her mother happy. But will the first love die or pop up randomly? What will be the decision of Gaurav?
I was most impressed by how distinctly real the characters feel. They are characterised by accumulation—of memory, sorrow, concern, and endurance—rather than by significant turning events. These individuals are negotiating marriage, friendship, grief, and acceptance without the ease of tidy conclusions. Their changes are subtle but significant. Though everyone is moved, they are all still looking for answers. It feels genuine to have that ambiguity. After all, clarity is rarely provided on demand in life.
The prose is straightforward, serene, and very human. It lets emotions flow rather than forcing them to reach tidy conclusions. Instead than looking for resolution, the characters learn to accept what is left. The stories feel genuine and accessible because of that decision.
Overall, this is one of the best stories that made me thinking long after reading the book too.
