Trials of Dharma : Book 2 of Samrat Yudhishthira trilogy by Semanti Chakraborty | Book review

Book review:

“You are not realising the root cause of the problem, brother. Power is not the ultimate aim. Unless you are prepared well to handle intrigues that come unannounced, power does not remain.”- Quote from the book.

"Trials of Dharma" marks the second instalment of the Samrat Yudhishthira Trilogy. It delves into the pivotal episode of the dice game and subsequent exile. The narrative unfolds as Yudhishthira loses everything in the fateful game, leading to the disrobing and humiliation of Draupadi by the Kauravas, followed by the Pandavas and Draupadi enduring their 13-year exile.

A poignant aspect of the book is the meticulous portrayal of Yudhishthira's efforts to mend his relationship with Draupadi. His genuine remorse and absence of excuses contribute to a gradual reconciliation, showcasing a commendable character arc. Draupadi's fiery yet patient character retains her gentle demeanour, emphasising her pivotal role in keeping the brothers united.

The narrative sheds light on Yudhishthira's resilience in the face of profound struggles. Despite enduring successive tragedies that mar his happy memories, he presses on, undeterred by pain, steadfastly walking the path of Dharma. This unwavering commitment may well explain his epithet, "Dharmaraj Yudhishthira."

I appreciate the way Draupadi maintains her warrior spirit even after being dragged by hair in the courtroom or her consistency in staying in the woods with her husband leaving her kin in safe parts for 13 years. Her pain, agony, and efforts to keep Samrat's brothers together.

The author skillfully portrays Yudhishthira's growth, illustrating his acts of rescue and protection for his brothers and cousins in various challenging situations. The character's internal conflicts find resolution as he grapples with moral dilemmas while safeguarding his kin.

In this book, the author highlights the fact about half knowledge. Pandavas were not aware of this dice game still they reluctantly accepted to play the game and adhere to the consequences. Why does a person jump into wrongdoings when his conscience doesn't allow it?

The author meticulously weaves the storyline in a vivid and evocative manner. Language is lucid and gripping which keeps the readers engrossed till the end. Her deep research and detail is quite evident.

In conclusion, "Trials of Dharma" is a compelling book that vividly depicts Yudhishthira's character development. His adept handling of dharma in challenging circumstances serves as a notable highlight. This book is highly recommended for enthusiasts of the Mahabharata, offering a captivating exploration of the enduring themes within the epic.
