Book review:
"The Story of Maya” by Mallur Sheshadri Sandeep is a poignant and insightful exploration of the life of Maya, a young woman grappling with Schizophrenia. In this narrative the reader gets familiar with so many perspectives. I really felt the urge of a father who bitterly feels the need to cure his daughter but is stuck with his wife who is also suffering from the same disease.
In a country like India, where many people suffer from mental disorders but hardly few have the courage to accept the girl or a boy with this issue. So parents pave the path of betrayal and marry them but effects could not be changed. The only change is both the families suffer only in the hope of forced relationship. Only luck can change their destiny.
Maya is a university topper but the scroll of events change her life upside down. Her attempts to suicide are skillfully smashed. But a forced relationship encounters her to spend a decade in rehabilitating centres. It is intriguing to read how the toll of her life changes. Will she ever be fine to live her life with peace with her family? Or her life will continue to be mentally disturbed?
The author expertly portrays the characters and their struggles, allowing readers to empathize with Maya’s journey and her battles with her mental health. The language of the story is quite intriguing and keeps the reader engaged throughout.
Overall, this book is a nice attempt to shed some light on people's life suffering from mental disorders. I liked reading it.
