Life Is a Battlefield: Insights from the Eternal Wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita by Priya Arora
"Life is a Battlefeild" is an insightful representation of universal truths that highlights the enduring relevance of the Gita in our lives today. In this book, I get to learn about Vedanta, the most profound revelations of the rishis, the philosophical inquiry into the essence of our being.
The book comprises of 12 insightful chapters from Vedanta, and begins with one verse from the Gita itself. Each chapter is full of verses and key takeaways explaining the truth behind our existence.
I admired the metaphor of clay to explain the concept of non-duality. Each pot is, in effect, nothing more than its constituent day. If pots had egos, one pot might think of itself as better than the other pots based on its more elaborate form though, fundamentally, it is just clay, no different from any other pot. Similarly, Vedanta teaches that Self, pure attributeless consciousness, called by any name- Brahman, Atman, God- is the reality underlying all creation, both animate and inanimate.
The author has meticulously penned the varied verses from Gita, buddha and Vedanta. Her deep research and thorough facts with simple translation for lay person to understand makes it more evident to read and follow. Her best part is the key takeaways from each chapter and detailed explanation on happiness.
The author pours light on the fact that Hapiness lies in cultivating contentment that envelops you in satisfaction, irrespective of passing joys and sorrows as transient as summer and winter. She emphasises on the verse from Gita that those who identify with their unchanging dimension, remain unmoved even when buffeted about by life from all sides.
Overall, it offers perennial wisdom, relevant across time and faith. This also addresses existential questions that have perplexed humanity since the dawn of civilization. I learnt ample lessons and tried to imbibe few of them in my life too.
Highly recommended!
